8 Nigerian Creative Rockstars To Look Out For In 2019
Putting the internet to good use, BollyLomo got on our radar when social networking platform ‘Keek’ was at its peak. During his final year of university in England, his witty persona and comedic acts grew his popularity on the platform which later translated to other social media platforms like Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram.
Behind his comedic persona is a talented music artist. Although Gbolahan Olatunde’s (BollyLomo) first interest was music, his journey navigating the media and showbiz industry has brought out other skills (acting, presenting and event host) and quirks that have made the young creative’s goofiness grow on us.
Bolly’s comic quirks started by sharing stories of his dating experiences and women who are his Achilles heel. Since bursting onto the scene, he has featured on platforms like; Battabox, EbonyLife TV, African Magic and more. Bolly is also known for roles on ‘On The Real’ TV series, ‘Lagos Big Boy’, ‘Ojukokoro’ and many. He has worked alongside famous faces like Wale Ojo, Somkele Idalama, Zainab Balogun and his BFF, Falz.
In 2018, Bolly proved to have mastered his art and settled into his craft comfortably. We look forward to his playing more challenging roles and characters outside his comedic elements.
Tayo Aina is a self taught photographer and cinematographer based in Lagos. Tayo’s foray into the media world came as a surprise to those who know him personally as they were convinced he was going to end up in one of the scientific professions like medicine or engineering.
Outside photography, Tayo is the co-founder of ‘Space Book’, an app that allows you book spaces for your meetings, seminars, indoor and outdoor events right on your phone with just a few clicks. The platform serves as a directory for events spaces, creative work spaces and recreational spots in Nigeria.
Tayo’s approach to visual storytelling has found a way to reignite citizens’ love for Nigeria and has done a complete 360 by changing the stereotypical notion and taking away certain insecurities that Nigeria is way underdeveloped or not a good visual representation in comparison to other countries. His work depicts the beauty of the country and its scenery, it also showcases different tourist spots we have abandoned or are completely unaware of.
One of his remarkable works documenting the visual process of Falz’ controversial remake of Childish Gambino’s ‘This Is America’, titled; ‘This Is Nigeria’. Tayo started a youtube channel a few days before the new developments announced by the internet giant where accounts under 1,000 subscribers are ineligible for those youtube revenue cheques.
In less than two years, his channel has over 10,000 subscribers and 2 million views. 2019, we hope to see more of Tayo’s visual storytelling through documentaries, short films and web series.
