8 Nigerian Creative Rockstars To Look Out For In 2019
Papa Oyeyemi is a designer pushing the creative limits in his own particular manner. Papa is known for his one of a kind, extravagance and eclectic designs through his fashion brand ‘Maxivive’ and he doles out affordable high fashion designs and alternative/urban styles for young Nigerians and creatives (particularly university students and young professionals) through the brand 'Bodun Nigeria'.
Behind the alluring designs in the 3 to 5 or even more collections he puts out yearly, are methodically constructed messages and honest and emotional inspirations attached to it.
Finishing off 2018, Papa released a collection titled 'OKITI' in collaboration with media personality and creative, Sheifunmi on his 2019 mental health docu-series 'Survivor Stories'.
OKITI, singlehandedly designed by Papa, shares an account of a young creative's personal battles with mental health and persevering through the gloom and difficult days.
Papa began redefining his niche in fashion in 2017 when he celebrated the 10 year anniversary of his fashion brand, Maxivive. The process involved a merge of the music world with fashion by being one of the first and few designers in Africa who create soundtracks to their collections and co produce their own runway tracks.
This trend has picked up since Papa started knocking it all the way out of the park by collaborating with young music creatives and underground acts on fashion music and runway songs. His most recent work ‘FOSTER’, follows the current political and social issues presently going on in Nigeria, highlighting the new level of consciousness among young millennials about our political climate and the need to take an initiative
One of the many bold steps Papa took in the past year was combing his background in Psychology with his creativity to begin the initiative ‘BOYC’ a bi-monthly crystal ball of young creatives in Nigeria. During this occasion, young creatives write open letters to nominated creatives who have made impacts in their creative fields in past months and it is read to them out loud by other selected young creatives known as ‘BOYC Readers’.
In 2019, Papa’s ‘BOYC’ continues to collaborate with young creatives in media and creative industries to document real-time details and achievements of creatives in Africa. The aim is to make ‘BOYC’ an encyclopedia of Young Creatives.
We became very familiar Ajifa when she co-produced and hosted Entertainment Splash on TVC alongside fast-rising actor, Akah Nnani. Preceding that, she was the entertainment host and producer on 'The Breakfast Show' which circulated on the defunct HITV and UK's Sky 204. Moving on from broadcast television, she appeared on a reality/travel web series ‘Here and Now’ produced by RedTV while simultaneously co-producing ‘The Sauce’.
Other than her bubbly personality and funny quirks as observed through our TV screens and social media, Ajifa uses dance as a form of expression and a medium for keeping fit. April of 2018, her moving abilities stunned individuals when she commenced ‘Dance with Ajay’ which curates Afro/Hip-Hop dance, Latin/Jazz, Aerobics dance classes (in Lagos and now, Abuja). Her dance class has turned into a spot where young creatives go to let loose and unwind from Lagos’ hustle and bustle.
Wrapping up 2018, Ajay announced her production company through the campaign 'Building Bridges' by author/spoken word artist, Dike Chukwumerije. The campaign was created to promote solidarity and harmony among Nigerians online. This has translated to reality via the documentary - 'The Evolution of our Integration', as part of the ‘Building Bridges’ campaign.
In addition to that, her company produced the short films ‘The ones we cannot marry’ and ‘The ones we blame’ influenced by the sense of togetherness and patriotism under the theme ‘OUR TRIBAL BUBBLES’. Famous faces like Falz and BollyLomo starred in the Ajay directed short films.
In 2019, we are looking forward to more visual stories from Ajifa. Stories that touch and shape our consciousness.
